State Dog Training School
The Police Dog Squad of Kerala State was first started in the year 1959 at Thiruvananthapuram with three Alsatian pups for providing assistance in the detection of crimes throughout the state. Later on, Sub Units were started at Ernakulum, Calicut, and Palakkad.
With a vision to unify the training of Police Dogs across the state and to bring precision into the training, State Dog Training School was established in the Kerala Police Academy on 1st July 2007. All Dogs for Kerala Police are trained here. Advanced training by expert trainers in various categories is provided. The dogs are trained in various disciplines like detection of Explosive and Narcotic, Infantry Patrolling, Search and Rescue, Tracker, Guarding and Attacking, etc.
Training and Refresher courses of dogs of other departments like Airport Customs, Forest, and Jail are also being carried out in the School. Training for Trainers (ToT) courses are also being organized for the development of training delivery skills of the trainers.
The School has the capacity and infrastructure facility to impart training for more than 100 dogs at a time.
The Dog Training School is equipped with good training infrastructure like Explosive/Narcotic boxes, platforms, walls, etc. The “Agility Park” in the school keeps the dogs agile and the activities performed in the park help the dogs strengthen their muscles, improve coordination, keep them fit, and increase endurance. The Training School has separate vehicle for the transportation of the dogs.
Vishranthi
Dogs serving Kerala Police are made to retire once they attain old age or become ineffectual due to ailments. “Vishranthi” is a center to rehabilitate such dogs. Sufficient staff is employed at the center to take care of the dogs. The center can accommodate 20 dogs.
Dog Memorial and Cemetry
The Dog Memorial and Cemetery for the dogs of the K-9 Squad constructed in the Kerala Police Academy was dedicated on 19th June 2021. The cemetery has been built near the retirement and rehabilitation Centre “Vishranthi” in the Academy. The discerning vision of Kerala Police to have a serene, peaceful, and dignified space for burial ceremonies and memory of the dog officers who died serving the people of Kerala through the K-9 Squad led to the construction of the cemetery.
